The California Mediterranean Diet Pantry

These are my recommendations for foods (and brands when important) to keep on hand for preparing fresh Mediterranean foods. If there is a brand listed, it is because that brand is free from questionable contaminants such as BPA, lead, GMOS etc.

The California Mediterranean Diet Pantry:

California Extra Virgin Olive Oil:

Bariani, California Olive Ranch, Stonehouse, Bellindora, Olivina,
California Harvest, Trader Joe’s California

Nuetral Oil:

grape seed or canola (organic)

Balsamic Vinegar:

“O” California Balsamic vinegar, Bellindora, California Harvest , BR Cohn, Kimberley, Bariani

Other vinegar:

wine vinegar, rice vinegar, apple cider vinegar

Grains:

brown rice, wild rice, specialty wild rice blends (for example Lundberg), oats, whole wheat flour, coarse cornmeal (polenta), other specialty grains (whole wheat berries, barley, farro, quinoa, etc.), popcorn, whole wheat bread, whole grain pasta, masa, hominy

Legumes:

Dried beans: Pinto, cannellini, lentils, black-eyed peas, split peas, dried specialty heirloom beans (For example beans from Rancho Gordo or The Chili Smith).

Canned beans: Eden foods canned beans, Eden foods canned refried beans

Nuts:

walnuts, almonds, pistachios, pecans, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, hazelnuts

Dried fruit:

prunes, figs, raisins, dates, apricots, peaches, pears

Other:

Dijon Mustard, California dried tomatoes,  Muir Glen canned tomatoes, local honey, dried chilies, cured olives, organic mayonnaise, maple syrup

In the refrigerator: onions, garlic,  eggs, fresh herbs when available, organic margarine such as “Earth Balance”.

Herbs/spices:

Mediterranean Herbs: rosemary, oregano, thyme, marjoram, bay leaves, basil, tarragon

Latin: cilantro, cinnamon, cumin, chilies, cocoa or chocolate

Asian: cilantro, cinger, Thai lime and leaf, soy sauce, sesame oil, turmeric, star anise
